Intel unveils Atom-based Queensbay system-on-chip, in-car infotainment, China Mobile partnership

Intel unveils Atom-based Queensbay system-on-chip, in-car infotainment system, China Mobile partnershipCan’t get enough of Intel’s Atom? Try the new Tunnel Creek system-on-chip flavor that the company has announced. It’s part of the Queensbay platform, something of a Menlow successor that’s better suited for MIDs and the like thanks to its greater RAM capacity (still only 1GB), PCIe bus (opening the door to Ion), and integrated gigabit LAN. All that with a consumption of just 5TDP leaves our friend Chippy from UMPC Portal to say the platform could be “the natural choice for simple, low-cost MIDs.” As Intel ramps up for its Developer Forum the company is also touting its partnership with the Chinese auto manufacturer HawTai to produce a MeeGo-based infotainment system that, wait for it, also runs on Atom. And, finally, China Mobile is looking to rely on Intel chips for “targeted platforms powering its wireless networks” and to “provide our broadband wireless network the benefits of world class energy efficiency.” Next up: Atom-based pacemakers, espresso machines, and puppy dogs.

Pentium 4 takes on modern CPUs in a benchmarking showdown, suffers ignominious defeat

If there’s one thing that bugs us about desktop component reviews, it’s that they tend to compare the latest hardware against the stuff immediately preceding it. Everyone wants to know what the improvements between generations are, but for many it’s also equally useful to know how 2010′s freshness compares to their own computers, which might have been bought or built a few years back. For those precious prospective upgraders, Tech Report have put together an extremely thorough benchmarking session which compares the venerable Pentium 4 670 and its silly 3.8GHz clock speed to a pair of new budget parts: the Core i3-530 from Intel and quad-core Athlon II X4 635 from AMD. Naturally, they’ve also included other contemporary parts like the high-end Core i7s and Phenoms, as well as a Core 2 Quad Q6600 from a couple of years ago to bridge the gap between the ancient 90nm Prescott and the 32nm young pretenders. It’s all quite fascinating in the geekiest (and therefore best) of ways, so why not hit that source link and get reading.

Broadcom’s Crystal HD tech to liven up HD capabilities of N450-based netbooks

NVIDIA’s Ion technology may be hogging the limelight when it comes to netbook graphics, but Broadcom’s no stranger to the space. After giving Acer’s Aspire One HD playback capabilities that it could only dream of just months prior, the company’s newly announced Crystal HD platform could provide Intel’s Atom N450 with the multimedia boost it badly needs. The nitty-gritty details are still being withheld, but we’re told that “top-tier OEMs including Asus, Dell and Samsung” will be slapping this into their upcoming N450-based netbooks. If you’re curious as to why you should care, the BCM70015 promises “near flawless” HD video playback, including support for Flash Player 10.1 and Blu-ray flicks. We’re told to expect it to start popping up in forthcoming machines throughout 2010, and if you’re looking to soak up anything else in the meanwhile, a promotional video awaits you after the break.

BMW and Mercedes to have Intel Atom-based infotainment systems in 2012

Intel just announced that both BMW and Mercedes-Benz will be shipping Atom-based infotainment systems designed by Harman-Becker in 2012. BMW will make the system available in the 7-series, while MB will put it in S- and C-class vehicles. According to Paul Otellini, these are just the first Atom-based in-vehicle entertainment systems to be announced, and automakers are coming around to “consistent and persistent platforms,” so we’d expect this is the start of a very welcome trend. Sadly there was no demo, but we’ll be on the lookout here at IDF.

Dell’s 11.6-inch Inspiron 11z thin-and-light now on sale for $399

Dell may have ditched the 12-inch Mini netbook, but for those still looking for something a touch larger than 10-inches, there’s the all-new Inspiron 11z. Strictly classified as a “thin-and-light,” this three-pound machine measures in at just one-inch thick and ships with a 1.2GHz Celeron 723 processor, a 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit panel, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB (5400RPM) SATA hard drive, GS45 integrated graphics, WiFi, a 3-cell battery and nary an optical drive to speak of. There’s also a 1.3 megapixel camera, twin stereo speakers, an Ethernet port, three USB sockets, a 3-in-1 multicard reader and an HDMI output, though we get the feeling Windows Vista won’t be too happy with the hardware. Thankfully, you can drop your $399 now and snag Windows 7 on the cheap here in just a few months.

[Thanks, Joe]
