CSR just announced that their SiRFstarIV GPS receiver chip is providing location capabilities for Samsung’s latest Galaxy S II smartphone. What’s most interesting with CSR’s technology in this architecture is that the designer anticipated that the receiver would be operating very close to other smartphones and various other devices emitting radio frequency. So SiRFstarIV includes CSR’s jammer removal technology that detects, tracks and blocks up to 8 separate sources of interference in the GPS frequency band that could inhibit GPS signals.

Some of the other features of SiRFstarIV GSD4t – which is the model used in Galaxy S II includes -160 dBm tracking sensitivity, 8 mW in 1-Hz TricklePower mode,
cost effective 42 ball, 0.4 mm design that occupies less than 20 square millimeters and more.

BMW says they are in later stages of developing a transmission system that uses GPS data to predict your upcoming shifts. Parts of this system include the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, and the GPS navigation system.

DSC collects data real time on current road conditions. This information is used with GPS data which could foresee turns, traffic congestion, elevation change, etc. At the end you have a plan of action before the shift even occurs. In the end BMW claims you’ll experience a smoother, fasting shifting vehicle.

This new chip can track 88 satellites at once and has a 29 second cold start TTFF (time to first fix). Once locked in it can work with signals at -159dBm, and -145dBm when cold starting.

S4554GNS-LP is quite flexible; it supports GPS-only, GLONASS-only, and GLONASS + GPS modes. It embeds a dedicated search engine which is capable of performing 10 million time-frequency hypothesis testing per second. It can operate in temperature ranges from -40 to +85 C… via

At CES 2011 last week in Las Vegas Kenwood introduced four new in-dash GPS navigation + multimedia units where navigation was handled by Garmin.

The top of the line unit was the DNX7180 which is a double-DIN device that has lane assistance, junction view, built-in NAVTEQ live traffic service, Garmin’s ecoRoute, and support for vehicle diagnostics via the KNA-EC100 ODBII interface. DNX7180 also does Pandora provided you link it up with your smartphone. It has a 6.95″ touch screen, supports DVD videos, iPod, USB video, and split screen feature.

DNX6180 has a slightly smaller 6.1″ touch screen which makes space for a knob for volume control. It also supports various external sources including DVD, MP3/WMA, iPod, Pandora, USB sticks, HD radio, etc.

DNX5180 is pretty much identical to DNX6180 but lacks Bluetooth connectivity. However the KCA-BT300 can be added later for this feature.

Single-DIN KVT-516 does not have GPS navigation by default but you can always add the KNA-G610 later on for this feature. KVT-516 has a 7″ retractable touch screen.

Here is the pricing information:

DNX7180 $1,500.00 February, 2011

DNX6180 $1,200.00 February, 2011

DNX5180 $1,150.00 February, 2011

KVT-516 $850.00 Available Now

KNA-EC100 $150.00 February, 2011

Korean Thinkware just announced a new iNavi in-dash GPS navigation system. The new model is called iNavi Ready R100 and it uses a 1GHz processor (Cortex A8) with 512MB of RAM.

It has two different screen sizes, a 7″ model and an 8″ model. The really awesome part is that the device can handle two displays so you can have your navigation going while playing a cartoon in 720p resolution for the kids in the back seat.

Other features real time traffic updates, digital TV receiver, G-sensor, USB 2.0 host, microSD card slot, super realistic 3D views, and the new Ublox6 GPS receiver that is most sensitive than ever… via

I guess we really should’ve said “GPS enabled smartphones are taking considerable market share from standalone GPS navigation makers” but a sensational title is always more fun. But either way future is not looking great for GPS navigation manufacturers. According to a study done by a Swedish research company (Berg Insight) standalone GPS navigation systems are bound to become obsolete as their functions are now part of most smartphones or just embedded into vehicles’ dashboard.

Now that Nokia and Google are giving the technology away for free, GPS navigation makers will have to come up with ways to make their products standout or offer functionality that is not covered by smartphones. We can already see some change as Garmin and TomTom now offer real time traffic information, and working with vehicle manufacturers to embed their technology into vehicles at the factory.

… the number of personal navigation devices shipped globally will peak in 2011 at 42 million, up from 40 million this year, before beginning a gradual, but inexorable decline…

However CEO’s from navigation makers are still hopeful arguing that people are still willing to pay extra for high end specialized devices. I guess Garmin is in the best position here as they’ve already branched into other markets bringing in 1/3 of their sales from marine, aerial, and fitness related GPS devices.

Garmin seems to be experimenting with a new live GPS tracking device called GTU 10 as we caught a glimpse of it in the FCC docs. It is not announced yet as they have a request to keep external, and internal photos, users manual, and test setup photos under cover for another 45 days.

We’re not exactly sure what market Garmin is after with the GTU 10 but the device is called “GSM/GPRS enabled GPS tracking device” and operates on GSM850 and PCS1900 frequencies. It is also powered by via USB port and that’s really all we can get the from the available FCC docs.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

There’s really no keeping up with the hardware Korean’s throw into their GPS navigation systems. This latest one is from enNavi HD which runs off of a 1.2Ghz CPU, 7″ HD screen with 1920×1080 resolution. That’s pretty decent but the 256MB of RAM and the Windows CE 6.0 OS don’t really keep up with the rest of the specs. Oh well…

Anyhow the rest of the device has got USB in, SD card port, FM radio, T-DMB Digital TV support, and bluetooth. All of this for the equivalent of $265USB.
