Google Hacked, May Pull Out of China

D H NG writes “Following a sophisticated attack on Google infrastructure originating from China late last year, Google has decided to take ‘a new approach’ to China. In their investigation, Google found that more than 20 large companies had been infiltrated and dozens of Chinese human rights activists’ Gmail accounts had been compromised. Google has decided to ‘review the feasibility of [its] business operations in China,’ no longer censoring results in Google.cn, and if necessary, to ‘shut down Google.cn, and potentially [Google's] offices in China.’”

Will Google and Android Kill Standalone GPS?

xchg passes along a WiseAndroid piece on the drop in value of Garmin and TomTom shares following Google’s announcement yesterday of Google Maps Navigation. “Shares of GPS device makers Garmin and TomTom plummeted… through a combination of their quarterly results and the launch of Google Maps Navigation. Following both low guidance for Garmin’s next quarter as well as poor results from TomTom, shares for the two fell 16.4 percent and 20.8 percent respectively and remained low through the entire trading day after news of Google’s free, turn-by-turn mapping service became public.” Today Lauren Weinstein posted a number of reasons why standalone GPS won’t go away any time soon.

Moving Away From the IT Field?

irving47 writes ‘With the economy the way it is, it’s a little iffy to even think about switching careers completely, but lately, I’ve gotten more and more fed up with trying to keep up with the technical demands of companies and customers that are financially and even verbally unappreciative. While I might be good at it, and the money is adequate, I’m curious to hear from Slashdotters who have gone cold-turkey from their IT/Networking careers to something once foreign to them. How did you deal with the income difference, if any? Do you find yourself dealing with people more, and if so, how did that work out?’

The US's Reverse Brain Drain

We may have to rethink the assumption that Silicon Valley is the hotbed of innovation in which all the world’s best and brightest want to work and live. TechCrunch has a piece by an invited expert on the reverse brain drain already evident and growing in the US as Indian, Chinese, and European students and workers in the US plan to return home, or already have. From an extensive interview with Chinese and Indian workers who had already left: “We learned that these workers returned in their prime: the average age of the Indian returnees was 30 and the Chinese was 33. They were really well educated: 51% of the Chinese held masters degrees and 41% had PhDs. Among Indians, 66% held a masters and 12% had PhDs. These degrees were mostly in management, technology, and science. … What propelled them to return home? Some 84% of the Chinese and 69% of the Indians cited professional opportunities. And while they make less money in absolute terms at home, most said their salaries brought a ‘better quality of life’ than what they had in the US. … A return ticket home also put their career on steroids. About 10% of the Indians polled had held senior management jobs in the US. That number rose to 44% after they returned home. Among the Chinese, the number rose from 9% in the US to 36% in China.”

Explaining Corporate Culture Through "The Office"

Writing in the ribbonfarm.com blog, Venkatesh Rao uses The Office to explain and illustrate a theory of management he calls the Gervais Principle (after the TV series’s creator). Taking off from Hugh MacLeod’s cartoon laying out a corporate hierarchy in layers of Sociopaths, the Clueless, and Losers, Rao riffs on and updates the Peter Principle, in these terms: “Sociopaths, in their own best interests, knowingly promote over-performing losers into [clueless] middle-management, groom under-performing losers into sociopaths, and leave the average bare-minimum-effort losers to fend for themselves.” Don’t know about you, but this analysis suddenly makes sense of much that mystified me in my sojourn in corporate America.

Intel's Braidwood Could Crush SSD Market

Lucas123 writes “Intel is planning to launch its native flash memory module, code named Braidwood, in the first or second quarter of 2010. The inexpensive NAND flash will reside directly on a computer’s motherboard as cache for all I/O and it will offer performance increases and other benefits similar to that of adding a solid-state disk drive to the system. A new report states that by achieving SSD performance without the high cost, Braidwood will essentially erode the SSD market, which, ironically, includes Intel’s two popular SSD models. ‘Intel has got a very good [SSD] product. But, they view additional layers of NAND technology in PCs as inevitable. They don’t think SSDs are likely to take over 100% of the PC market, but they do think Braidwood could find itself in 100% of PCs,’ the report’s author said.”
