Nook Color processor revealed: ARM Cortex A8-based TI OMAP3621

Barnes & Noble provided most of the specs for the Nook Color when it launched the device on Tuesday, but notably absent was any word on the processor that powers the e-reader. Thankfully, Texas Instruments has now come out confirmed that the Nook …

Rockchip shows off Android-based desk phone, won’t sell you one

We unfortunately didn’t spot this one ourselves at IFA, but it looks like Rockchip had more than just the usual tablets on display at the show — it also had this Android-based desk phone tucked away at its booth. Before you get too excited, however (…

Rumored HTC Desire HD specs surface: 4.3-inch screen, 8-megapixel camera

NASDAQ and CEA announce Smartphone Index

The NASDAQ isn’t exactly our usual beat here at Engadget, but it’s not every day that a consumer electronics market segment gets elevated to the status of having its own index, which is what the stock exchange has now done with a little help from the Consumer Electronics Association. They’ve teamed up for the NASDAQ OMX CEA Smartphone Index, which consists of 84 companies that are involved in one way or another with the “building, design and distribution of handsets, hardware, software, and mobile networks associated with the development, sale and usage of smartphones.” We’re having a bit of trouble tracking down the complete list of companies included in the index, but it does apparently have the usual suspects like Apple, Google and RIM, and it has started out with a valuation 250.00.

Viliv N5 MID set to debut at CES

We’ve already gotten up close with the S10 Blade that Viliv is promising to show off at CES, but this invitation is the first we’ve heard of the company’s N5 mobile internet device, which is also slated to debut at the show. As you can see above, this one is a clamshell MID, and packs a 4.8-inch multitouch display, a fully QWERTY keyboard, and 3G, WiFi, and GPS capabilities. Also on track for an official launch: the dual-boot Windows CE / Android Viliv P3, and the Windows CE-based, 1080p video-playing HD5 PMP.

2011 Audi A8 packs optional EDGE, Google Earth

We’re guessing it won’t be the tipping point that finally convinces you to buy an Audi A8, but it looks like those in the market for the car will be able to add a nice little option to the 2011 model: a built-in nav system complete with Google Earth and a GPRS / EDGE modem. Yeah, so it’s not 3G, but it is apparently the first time that Google Earth has been made available in a production vehicle, which certainly counts for something. In addition to serving up various Google-sourced points of interest, that modem will also let you download a range of other up-to-date information to the nav unit, although it’s not clear exactly what that will entail. No word on how much it’ll add to the cost of the A8, but it looks like it won’t be available right when the car rolls out early next year — Audi is only saying “mid 2010″ at the moment.

Update:
As some commenters have helpfully noted, it seems that while the A8 won’t initially roll out with 3G, it will be getting a UMTS modem in mid 2010, which should provide the bandwidth necessary for Google Earth and allow for simultaneous voice and data connections.

Direct Insight debuts SODIMM-sized, ARM-based computer-on-a-module

Well, it may not exactly be the computer everyone’s been pining for, but those that have dreamed of an ARM Cortex-A8-based computer on a SODIMM module now finally one to call their own. That comes in the form of Direct Insight’s new TRITON-TX51, which outdoes the Nokia N900 with an 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor, along with Freescale’s i.MX515 system-on-a-chip, 128MB DDR400 RAM, 128MB of NAND flash, and a touchscreen controller that can drive screens at resolutions up to 1,280 x 768. You’ll also get some other things nice to have on a computer like a 10/100 ethernet controller and a USB 2.0 interface, and even a reasonably capable PowerVR graphics engine that can do OpenGL ES 2.0 and hardware 720p decoding for MPEG-4/H264 video. Look for this one to land sometime next month for €150 (or just over $220).
