DigitalCube shows off sexy iSTATION S3 PMP

We’ll just go ahead and get the bad news out of the way: if you call yourself a North American, and you’re not gutsy enough to find an importer, you’ll probably never own the downright beautiful device shown above. Known as the iSTATION S3, DigitalCube‘s latest arrives with 8/16/32GB of storage, an HDMI output, a battery good for 20 hours of audio playback (or 8 hours of video), an expansive 3.5-inch AMOLED display, WVGA (800 x 480) resolution and support for a veritable smorgasbord of file formats. Sadly, we’ve no price or release date to share, but by all means, give that read link a tap if you’re looking for more eye candy.

Akira Lives! [Akira]

Forget what you’ve previously heard: The live-action movie version of Akira is still happening and, if nothing else, it’s probably going to have a great script.

Collider is reporting that the silence surrounding the movie has been the result of waiting for Children of Men and Iron Man screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby to complete the script, and that the project is still considered a “high priority” with a potential 2011 release date if the script is approved. Here’s hoping that rumored star Joseph Gordon-Levitt won’t be too busy with GI Joe sequels.

Garmin-Asus nuvifone M20 launches in Taiwan, Windows Mobile and all

Following last month’s launch of the proprietary OS’d G60, Taiwan’s now playing host to the Windows Mobile-based M20 from Garmin-Asus, the joint venture’s second model. Local carrier Chunghwa will be carrying the phone, which features HSDPA, a VGA display, 3 megapixel cam, and comprehensive navigation capabilities that earn it the Garmin name — but it turns out they’ll also be launching the iPhone 3GS and Hero in the next few days, a situation that effectively defines the phrase “hostile competitive landscape.” Best of luck, Garmin-Asus — given the Duke Nukem-esque delays you’ve encountered in your bumpy road to retail, you need all the luck you can get if you want to turn a profit any time soon.

Atree J100 gets lost in the forest of Korean PMPs

We certainly can’t knock the 4GB Atree J100 when it comes to its well stocked arsenal of goodies: it has a three-inch touchscreen, an e-dictionary, DMB digital TV tuner, video playback, and microSD expansion — and it plays music too. Audio formats are also plentiful, with MP3, WMA and OGG for the commoners, and FLAC and APE for the lossless fanatics. Too bad it’s held back by the chunky casing, which looks big enough to have fit a five-inch screen if the designers were so inclined. With slicker-looking competition from the likes of Cowon and Samsung, the otherwise entirely useful J100 might struggle to stand out, but if you’re willing to look beyond its superficial shortcomings, it’s available now for 198,000 KRW ($158).

Dell’s 11.6-inch Inspiron 11z thin-and-light now on sale for $399

Dell may have ditched the 12-inch Mini netbook, but for those still looking for something a touch larger than 10-inches, there’s the all-new Inspiron 11z. Strictly classified as a “thin-and-light,” this three-pound machine measures in at just one-inch thick and ships with a 1.2GHz Celeron 723 processor, a 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit panel, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB (5400RPM) SATA hard drive, GS45 integrated graphics, WiFi, a 3-cell battery and nary an optical drive to speak of. There’s also a 1.3 megapixel camera, twin stereo speakers, an Ethernet port, three USB sockets, a 3-in-1 multicard reader and an HDMI output, though we get the feeling Windows Vista won’t be too happy with the hardware. Thankfully, you can drop your $399 now and snag Windows 7 on the cheap here in just a few months.

[Thanks, Joe]

Did Someone Track Down the Mysterious Android MID? [Android]

Remember that iPhone-like Android MID that everyone went crazy about yesterday? It looks like someone may have tracked it down. Manufactured by SMiT, the device is called the MID-560. And it’s got decent specs.

That’s a 5-inch touchscreen with an impressive 800 x 480 resolution. And internally, an 533/667MHZ ARM 11-based Samsung 6410 chip should run the device as quickly as any smartphone with codec support including AAC, OGG, DivX, XviD, and H.264.

Storage stays light by maxing at 8GB, but a miniSD card slot offers lots of expansion. Wi-Fi and GPS are standard.

Sadly, even if you were to import the thing, you wouldn’t be able to take advantage of CMMB mobile TV broadcast support (DVB intended for the Chinese market). But such is life in the US.

So is the MID-560 our mystery MID? Maybe, but it’s tough to confirm given that we only have a low-end render. And Pocketables, the source of the original shots, is still not convinced. [SMiT via Shanzai]

User manual for Garmin’s connected nuvi 1690 reveals “nuinfo” service branding

The connected PND, by most accounts, is a dying breed. Dash couldn’t pull it off, TomTom’s execution was downright pathetic and no one even remembers that Insignia made one. But considering that Garmin's nüvi range has always delivered, we're going to let the nüvi 1690 ship before passing judgment. Said navigator, which just slipped into the FCC’s database a fortnight ago, didn’t have too many details attached to it, but a recently discovered user manual reveals that although Garmin’s local-data service will be powered by Google, the company has branded it with the virtually-unpronounceable name “nuinfo.” Yeah, we have no idea, but we’re definitely interested in finding out what the ultimate plan is — the shots of the device in the manual lead us to believe that local weather information will be on tap in addition to the usual waypoint searching and so forth, but unless Garmin throws these so-called “connected services” in gratis, every smartphone owner on the planet will simply laugh and move on.

“District 9″ Best Sci-fi Movie of 09?

Travis wrote in with a story that says much of what my friends have been saying to me all weekend: "Slashdot covered 'District 9' back in July. I was originally excited to see this movie for its exhibition of exoskeleton robot 'mechs' (see images and video at Hizook.com ). After watching the film this opening weekend, I can honestly say that it was an amazing science fiction movie! Everything was spot-on: the plot, the human elements, the alien elements, the technology, and the seamless blend of special effects with real camera capture. This film should vault Neill Blomkamp into sci-fi stardom, on par with George Lucas and the Wachowski Brothers (of Matrix fame). This is certainly a must-see movie — easily the best movie of the year."

Lenovo IdeaCentre Q700 Wants To Be Your Lounge Room’s Black Box [PCs]

The Q700 looks like a nettop, but has a little more balls thanks to a 2.5GHz Pentium Dual-Core E5200. Top specs include a TV tuner, HDMI, 4GB RAM, 1TB hard disk, and Intel GMA X4500 graphics. Prices start from $499.

About the size of a DVD player, the compact HTPC sits either horizontally or vertically (with stand), and has a metal liner to shield against electromagnetic radiation. Lenovo also says it’ll support 1080p.

On the front you’ll find a slot-loading DVD writer, four-in-one media card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro), four USB 2.0 ports, plus microphone and headphone jacks.

One the back: eSATA and HDMI connections (nice!), VGA, four further USB 2.0 ports, and a variety of audio connections, including S/PDIF-out. Ethernet is standard, while options include 802.11g Wi-Fi, the TV tuner, and various flavors of Windows Vista. [Lenovo via Nexus404]
